This adult yellow-crowned night heron (Nyctanassa violacea) was photographed while roosting in the natural Alligator Swamp exhibit at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm, Anastasia Island, St. Augustine, Florida. Both species of night herons roost here, particularly early in the spring season, but do not breed here.
Thanks Kerry and Kerri. I was so excited when I came in in the morning and found this one perched on the railing. It let me get quite close too, even as other people passed by to get to other parts of the boardwalk.
Lovely shot of the heron.
